Railcard terms and conditions

1. Network Railcard

Conditions of issue and use of the Network Railcard and reduced priced tickets ('discounted tickets') bought with a Network Railcard

1) The Network Railcard is only valid for journeys which are undertaken on Train Companies shown below and within the area identified on the Network Railcard Area map.

2) You must sign the Railcard before use to show acceptance of all the conditions listed below. The Railcard and tickets bought with it are not transferable and must not be given, loaned or resold to anyone else. Only the named cardholder can use the Railcard.

3) You must be aged 16 years or over to purchase a Network Railcard.

4) Tickets for your journey should be purchased before boarding the train and when buying tickets you must show the Railcard.

5) You must carry the Network Railcard with you on your journey and when asked by rail staff, you must show a valid ticket and valid Railcard. If you fail to do so, you and, where applicable, each member of your group will be required to pay the full price Standard Single fare for your journey as if no ticket was purchased before starting your journey and in some cases a Penalty Fare. This does not apply if there was no ticket office at the station at which you began your journey or if the ticket office was closed and there was no ticket machine from which you could buy a discounted ticket.

6) You will be asked to pay the difference between the price of your discounted ticket and the full price Standard fare (or the Penalty Fare if travelling in the Penalty Fares area) if:

a) you travel beyond the station for which your ticket is issued;

b) you travel to a destination beyond the area shown on the map in this leaflet, without having first obtained the correct ticket for your journey;

c) you travel on a route for which a higher fare applies or at a time when reduced fares do not apply.

7) Network Railcard discounts generally only apply for travel after 10.00hrs Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays) and any time on weekends. Some train companies may allow Network Railcard holders to start their journey a little earlier. See time restrictions page for more details. [link to time restrictions]

8) A £13 minimum fare applies to all journeys Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. A £1 minimum fare applies to child fares at all times. The minimum fare for Anytime Day Travelcards is £17 at all times. Please note, minimum fares are subject to change during the validity of your Railcard.

9) The maximum group size is up to four adults (aged 16 years and over) and four children (aged 5 - 15 years).

10) Additional accompanying passengers for whom discounted tickets are purchased must travel with the Railcard holder throughout the journey.

11) Discounted tickets entitle you to travel only in Standard accommodation on the services of the participating Train Companies.

12) The Railcard and all tickets issued to the holder are issued subject to the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and the conditions listed on this website (and, where appropriate, to the Conditions of Carriage of Transport for London, Red Funnel Ferries and Wightlink). Copies of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage are available online at www.nationalrail.co.uk/nrcc

13) The Railcard will not be valid if it is damaged. The Train Companies do not undertake to replace damaged, lost or stolen Railcards, or to issue refunds on unused/unwanted Railcards, or to extend their validity. However, an application for the replacement of a Railcard may be made at (Home page url) A £10 administration fee will be payable for the replacement of a damaged or lost Railcard. No fee will be charged for the replacement of a stolen Railcard upon presentation of a crime reference number/documentation issued by the Police.

14) The Railcard does not become your property and if requested must be handed in to a representative of any Train Company.

15) The right is reserved to revise these conditions and availability of the tickets on which a discount is available. The Train Companies will endeavour to give three months' notice of any changes before they are due to come into effect.

Fraudulent use of Railcards and Railcard discounted tickets may lead to a criminal prosecution.

These Conditions are valid up to and including 1 January 2016.

2. 16-25 Railcard

Conditions of issue and use of the 16-25 Railcard and reduced priced tickets ('discounted tickets') bought with a 16-25 Railcard

The Railcard is sold on behalf of all the UK Train Companies. Reference to a ‘Train Company’ or the ‘Train Companies’ means those Train Companies which, pursuant to a franchise agreement, operate Passenger Railway Services in Great Britain. Any other licensed passenger train operators that may join the arrangement will accept the 16-25 Railcard for travel on their services.

1)  You must sign the Railcard before use to show acceptance of all the conditions as stated here.

2)  You must be aged 16-25 years old to purchase Railcard. Mature students are also eligible to purchase the 1-year Railcard if over 25 years old and in full time education (with valid proof). 3-year 16-25 Railcards are available online only and may be purchased up until the day before your 24th birthday.

3)  The Railcard and tickets bought with it are not transferable and must not be given, loaned, or resold to anyone else.

4)  Railcards purchased online will incorporate your photograph. If you have a Railcard that does not incorporate your photograph, you must carry a separate 16-25 Photocard (or where appropriate a ‘Permit to travel without Photocard’) and you must present this in any circumstance where you present your Railcard (buying tickets or travelling with reduced priced tickets).

5)  Tickets for your journey should be purchased before boarding the train and when buying tickets you must show the Railcard.

6)  You must carry your Railcard with you on your journey and when asked by rail staff, you must show a valid ticket and valid Railcard. If you fail to do so, you will be required to pay the full price Standard Single fare for your journey as if no ticket was purchased before starting the journey and in some cases a Penalty Fare. This does not apply if there was no ticket office at the station at which you began your journey or if the ticket office was closed and there was no ticket machine from which you could buy a discounted ticket.

7)  A £12 minimum fare applies for journeys starting between 4.30am-10am Monday to Friday excluding Advance Fares. This minimum fare does not apply on Public Holidays or throughout July and August.

8)  The Railcard will not be valid if it is damaged. The Train Companies do not undertake to issue refunds on unused/unwanted Railcards, or to extend their validity. In the event of loss or damage an application for the replacement of a Railcard may be made; where the Railcard was purchased online, customers may only request a replacement online.

9)  Only one replacement may be issued in a 12 month period for lost or damaged Railcards and a £10 administration fee is payable. No fee will be charged for the replacement of a stolen Railcard provided you have a crime reference number/documentation issued by the Police.

10)  The Railcard and all tickets issued at a Railcard discount are issued subject to the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and the conditions listed here. Copies of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage are available online at www.nationalrail.co.uk/nrcc

11)  The Railcard does not become your property and if requested must be handed in to a representative of any Train Company.

12)  The right is reserved to revise these Conditions. The Train Companies will endeavour to give three months’ notice of any changes before they are due to come into effect.

Fraudulent use of Railcards and Railcard discounted tickets may lead to criminal prosecution.

Special note

As long as you are aged 25 at the time that the Railcard is purchased, you may still travel at the discounted fare throughout the validity period of the Railcard, even if you become 26 years old during that time. Likewise, 3-year 16-25 Railcards purchased online up until the day before your 24th birthday will be valid for a full 3 years.

3. Family and Friends Railcard

Conditions of issue and use of the Family & Friends Railcard and reduced priced tickets (‘discounted tickets’) bought with a Family & Friends Railcard

ATOC Ltd enters into the contract for the issue and use of the Family & Friends Railcard on behalf of the Train Companies. Reference to a ‘Train Company’ or the ‘Train Companies’ means those Train Companies which, pursuant to a franchise agreement, operate Passenger Railway Services in Great Britain. Any other licensed passenger train operators that may join the arrangement will accept the Family & Friends Railcard for travel on their services.

1)  Both the First named holder and the Second named holder must sign the Railcard before use to show acceptance of all the Conditions listed in this leaflet. The name of the Second holder must be provided at the time of purchase and may not be added during the period of validity of the Railcard.

2)  The Railcard and tickets bought with it are not transferable and must not be given, loaned, or resold to anyone else. Only the named cardholder(s) can use the Railcard.

3)  Group size: At least one named cardholder and at least one child must be travelling to enable discounted tickets to be used. The maximum group size is up to four adults (aged 16 years and over) including the named cardholder(s), and four children (aged 5-15 years).

4)  If the named holders travel separately, only one of the holders may use the Railcard.

5)  Tickets for your journey should be purchased before boarding the train and when buying tickets you must show the Railcard.

6)  You must carry your Railcard with you on your journey and when asked by rail staff, you must show a valid ticket and valid Railcard. If you fail to do so, you and each member of your group will be required to pay the full price Standard Single fare for your journey as if no tickets were purchased before starting the journey and in some cases a Penalty Fare. This does not apply if there was no ticket office at the station at which you began your journey or if the ticket office was closed and there was no ticket machine from which you could buy discounted tickets.

7)  Additional accompanying passengers for whom discounted tickets are purchased must travel with the Railcard holder throughout the journey.

8)  Time restrictions apply for journeys in the Network Railcard area. Please refer to time restrictions, enquire at a station ticket office before your travel or phone National Rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

10)  Discounted tickets are not valid for travel in First Class, except for Upgrades to First Class at weekends (subject to availability) upon payment of the appropriate supplement.

11)  The Railcard will not be valid if it is damaged. The Train Companies do not undertake to issue refunds on unused/unwanted Railcards, or to extend their validity. In the event of loss or damage an application for the replacement of a Railcard may be made: where the original Railcard was purchased at a rail station this may only be requested at a staffed station ticket office (the completed ‘Receipt’ voucher from the original application form must be produced); where the Railcard was purchased online, customers may only request a replacement online.

Only one replacement may be issued in a 12 month period for lost or damaged Railcards and a £10 administration fee is payable. No fee will be charged for the replacement of a stolen Railcard provided you have a crime reference number/documentation issued by the Police. You will be requested to show some form of identification if obtaining a replacement from a station.

12)  The Railcard and all tickets issued at a Railcard discount are issued subject to the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and the Conditions listed here. Copies of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage are available online at www.nationalrail.co.uk/nrcc

13)  The Railcard does not become your property and if requested must be handed in to a representative of any Train Company.

14)  The right is reserved to revise these Conditions. The Train Companies will endeavour to give three months’ notice of any changes before they are due to come into effect.

Fraudulent use of Railcards and Railcard discounted tickets may lead to criminal prosecution.

Special notes regarding children’s tickets

Children aged under 16 at the time that the Railcard is purchased may still travel at the discounted child’s fare throughout the validity period of the 1-year Railcard, even if they become 16 years old during that time or, for a 3-year Railcard until the child turns 17.
